Sounds self serving as I am interested in buying an iceboat, but I think the best way to see a vintage/classic preserved is to pass it on to another individual who will use it. I have watched the wooden boat magazine for sale/free ads and it has struck me that the method seems to work. Not at all casting dispersion on museum donations. However, once your cherished property goes into the not for profit corporation, its just another item to store or resell to make room for something perceived as more interesting or valuable.
